Ahead of the 2025 UEFA Women's Nations League, the Republic of Ireland has announced Carla Ward as their new manager until 2027.

Eileen Gleeson's contract was not renewed after the team failed to qualify for the Euros. Their qualification came down to the final day, with a 2-1 loss to Cymru.

This defeat followed a Hannah Cain penalty, a Carrie Jones shot from distance that deflected into the net, and a consolation header from Anna Patten.

During her three years at Villa, Ward helped the side climb from mid-table to a top-half finish. However, after the 2023/24 WSL season, Ward stepped down from the managerial role at Aston Villa to prioritise family life.

During the 2024 Olympics, she served as an assistant coach under Emma Hayes, who was managing the USA team. The team won gold with an unbeaten record.

While Carla Ward seemed to be heading towards a more media-based career, taking on punditry opportunities, she is ready to return to management.

Ward will assume the role starting in the February international break, first up facing Turkey in the Nations League.
