Newcastle United 1-6 Liverpool FC

Attendance: 3,013

The FA Women’s League cup kicked off at the hands of Sophie Haywood for Newcastle United. The match at Kingston Park Stadium proved to show the vast differences of each team, as first-division Liverpool were clearly much stronger, both physically and technically. However, Newcastle’s hopes weren’t lost as the fans continued to show their support to push the team further.

Having just begun, a foul of Elysia Boddy proved vital for Liverpool’s attack as across from Cornelia Kapocs, Zara Shaw had her eye on the goal, forcing Hawkins to rise to meet it; the first of the visitor’s chances began to put pressure on the home team.

A long pass from Smith to Fisk, and a failure of a deflection by Olivia Watt resulted in the goal ending up offside. However, Liverpool’s relentlessness continued as soon enough a far strike from Shaw, netted easily in the left corner of the goal, was assisted by Japanese international Fuka Nagano. This was following a calm tempo of play from the visitors and a constant force of motion from the side.

Just a minute later and after a pass from Kapocs and a long unpressured run from Mia Enderby, another goal got past Hawkins, slotting into the right end making it 2-0 just 11 minutes in which caused more trouble to Newcastle.

After a Corner shot and many passes within the box, Captain Stokes’ long cross only managed to hit the crossbar, relieving pressure on Micah Haywood, who had been tended to by the physios ten minutes prior. She then made way for Amber-Keegan Stobbs, earning a round of applause for the home fans.

Just before the half-time whistle, the Red’s fourth goal came from a curved pass from Hobinger, making its way perfectly to Kapocs allowing the Swede to net the fourth goal of the afternoon, and marking her as the fourth scorer.

As the second half began, Liverpool made many changes, taking off: Smith, Fisk, Hobinger and Evans to make way for: Kiernan, Holland, Hinds and Silcock. After an injury during the first minute of the second half, Watt came off for McQuade.

As the second half continued, neither side could get their grips on the ball enough to score; that is until a failed pass from Newcastle ended up at Enderby’s feet. Once again, pushing right past Hawkins to make it her second goal and the fifth of the day, as she didn’t give up as she pushed further, but couldn’t get another goal.

Newcastle’s next attacks stemmed from the English forward Andrews as she relentlessly pushed Fahey and Silcock. This was soon the stem of Newcastle’s change as they took off: Boddy, Kelly and Sibley for Gibson, Hayles and Elson. The final change of the night came from Liverpool’s captain Niamh Fahey for Gemma Bonner, as there was just thirty minutes left.

The fastest movement on the pitch came from the home team, as Andrews and Stokes pushed right past the visitors’ defence with their speed, but the Australian Goalkeeper, once again, proved just how strong her team is.

Newcastle’s first and only goal of the night came just a few minutes before the end of the match as Amy Andrews finally managed to lob the ball past Micah and boosted the mood of the home fans and they erupted in cheers. Newcastle did not want this to be the end as Shania Hayles’ attack forced the ball to Micah, but ended up being a corner that got right back to the feet of the leaders.

Despite the final attacks from both sides, no goals seemed to come as all defenders used everything they could to save their teams. But Newcastle couldn’t get rid of the visitors as, during the added time, Nagano put her own name on the scoresheet with a strong strike into Hawkins’ net.

The evening then came to a close at Kingston Park Stadium as, despite the loss, the home fans kept their spirits high.
