Following what could be considered one of the most entertaining and enthralling penalty shootouts ever, between London City Lionesses and Tottenham Hotspur, the FA Cup draw was sealed as Spurs went through, winning 9-8 in the shootout.
The first quarter-final tie sets up a lovely fixture between top-of-the-table Charlton Athletic and this season’s WSL strugglers Liverpool at the Valley.
To get to this stage of the competition, the Addicks have had to go through three rounds of the competition. First defeating Watford 3-2 in the third round, before then going on to beat Swindon Town 10-0 and to lead them into the quarterfinal, their fifth-round tie was against Oxford United, where they ran out narrow 1-0 winners.
Liverpool, on the other hand, only entered the competition at the fourth-round stage, first defeating National League side London Bees 6-0, before being drawn to rivals Everton in the fifth round. In a heated game, they defeated the Toffees 2-1 before being drawn away to the Addicks for what is sure to be an enthralling quarter-final tie.
It’s an all-London affair for Chelsea this time around. Having defeated Manchester United in the Round of Sixteen with Naomi Girma scoring the winner in extra time, they will take on high-flyers this season, Tottenham Hotspur, following their dramatic penalty shootout win against London City Lionesses.
Arsenal defeated Bristol City 3-0 to stage their place in the quarter-finals, with goals from Kim Little, Victoria Pelova, and Frida Maanum putting the Robins to the sword in a game overshadowed by what looked to be a serious-looking injury to Olivia Smith. The Gunners will face the Seagulls as they take on Brighton and Hove Albion, who defeated fellow WSL side West Ham United to reach this stage of the competition.
Finally, Birmingham City have got themselves a tasty tie with Barclays WSL leaders Manchester City. The Bluenoses defeated the lowest-ranked side in Chatham Town in the round of sixteen to make the quarter-finals. Manchester City, on the other hand, defeated Sheffield United in the last round.
The two sides met in the FA Cup final in 2017 at Wembley Stadium, where the Citizens cruised past the Bluenoses, beating them 4-1 with goals from Lucy Bronze, Izzy Christiansen, Carli Lloyd and Jill Scott.
