Manchester City and England midfielder Laura Coombs has announced her retirement following the conclusion of the 2025/26 season.
The midfielder’s retirement comes after having an incredible career spanning just over nineteen years. She began her career in 2007, having first played for Arsenal before moving to Chelsea on a permanent deal in 2011, making fifty-two appearances before moving to Liverpool in 2017 after a successful loan spell.
Coombs joined Manchester City in the summer of 2019 and has so far racked up 147 appearances for the Citizens, as well as becoming only the fourth player in Barclays Women’s Super League history to feature over 200 times.
In her time at Manchester City, Coombs has won an FA Cup in 2020 and a League Cup in 2023. With the club in the FA Cup semi-final and chasing a first WSL title since 2016, it is possible she could add a final trophy with her beloved City.
In her 147 appearances, she’s racked up a nice 27 goals. Only Georgia Stanway, Caroline Weir and Izzy Christiansen have scored more from midfield than Coombs.
In terms of her international career, Coombs made seven appearances for the Lionesses between 2015 and 2023. She was awarded her first cap in October 2015, making her first England appearance in a 2-1 defeat to China. Her next England call-up came in 2020 for a training camp; however, she did not feature.
Her fine club form in 2023 was rewarded with a call-up to England’s Arnold Clark Cup squad, where she featured consistently, helping England retain the trophy.
She was also part of the 2023 World Cup squad down in Australia; she featured twice in the competition in the group stages and received a runners-up medal as England came up just short of Spain down under.
Congratulations on a fantastic career, Laura, and best of luck for what comes next!
