Manchester City have officially confirmed the signing of England international Beth Mead on a three-year deal running through until the summer of 2029.
Mead joins the Citizens on a free transfer, having played for Arsenal for the last nine years of her career. She takes the number 7 shirt, previously worn by the recently retired Laura Coombs.
In her spell in North London, she won a Barclays WSL title, three League Cups and an illustrious UEFA Champions League in a spell between 2017 and 2026. Individually, she has also won several accolades, including being the WSL’s youngest ever golden boot winner when she won it with Sunderland in 2015 at just 20 years old.
Speaking to Manchester City about her move, she said the following: “I’m very proud to be here. Obviously, City had an amazing season last year, and I am excited to start a new chapter here.
“I think the way City plays suits me really well, and I feel like it can get something extra out of my game.”
Last season, she featured in 21 matches, starting in 12 of them. In these 21 games, she registered 5 goals and 2 assists, helping Arsenal to a second-place finish.
In terms of her career, she also holds the record for the most WSL assists in history with an impressive 52 to her name and currently sits joint fifth in the all-time goalscoring lists with 72 goals, something which she will be sure to improve in her time at City.
City’s director of football Therese Sjorgan also praised Mead by saying, “She’s shown what it takes to consistently perform on the kind of big stages we want to regularly be competing at, so she’ll be a brilliant addition to our already impressive squad of players.” (Quotes via mancity.com)
